Vegan Bag Lady Alert!
So, I have a confession to make.
I’m a bag lady.
Well, it used to be worse, MUCH WORSE. I had way. too. many. bags. It was a time in my life where I had way too much “STUFF” to begin with. Now days, I’m in a small cottage in down town where space is a concern. So I have fewer bags. We have enough grocery bags to support even our most in depth runs to the co-op or Whole Foods and I only carry 2 bags myself. I have my over the shoulder canvas messenger bag from an army surplus store and I recently acquired a Penguin publishers black canvas tote for free from work.
Recently, I’ve been carrying the smaller Penguin bag all over the place when I’m not trekking to campus. I’ve decked it out with a scarf made by my mom and a pin of a tattooed lady (not a self portrait I promise) that is also from the bookstore where I work. This is probably just about the easiest DIY project on the face of the planet. There are at least 1,000 directions you could go in with this project, and I’m giving you the basics so have at it and let me know what you create!
How to transform a tote into a bag
Materials:
Bag, vegan preferably of the canvas tote variety
Scarf, also vegan, seriously go to your local thrift store and you’ll find some great ones
pin, button, safety pin etc. to secure your scarf
Step 1: Tie scarf around one bag handle
Step 2: Secure with pin, or 2 or three… (both of mine are from local shops)
Step 3: Impress all your friends with your fashion savviness.
Seriously. Easiest. DIY. Project. EVER.
Well, er except for the cat in the way of the photo shoot. Seriously, just can’t get work done around here!
Bisous! (and happy bagging!)
Rachel

Impressive how one simple added flourish adds volumes of personality to that bag. Smart idea!
Thanks! It is pretty amazing how easy it is to alter the look of something just by changing one little thing!
Hey bag lady – I’m a bag lady, too! Cute project
!
Thanks! Good to know I’m not the world’s only vegan bagger!
You should see the back of my car…just as in your post, I could clean out Whole Foods and still have empty bags!

I’m a total vegan bag lady, though prefer the pleather variety over canvas though I have my fair share of totes. My favorite being a graphic, Helvetica font emblazoned one I designed with my friends initials for their wedding (used as a favor). I use it every day in addition to my regular purse to carry my lunch, snacks, water bottle and other crap that makes me feel healthy.
Glad to meet another vegan bag lady! I just love my bags! And I’m glad that you do too!!
