Vegan Treats n Sweets!
So it’s official. I definitely have a sweet tooth. And ya know what? There’s nothing wrong with that! I try and keep my sweeties within a reasonable range, but then again I can’t resist a beautiful vegan cupcake at my favorite local coffee shop now and again when the mood strikes me. (The empty wrapper is about 2 inches away from the key board as I type…) I love to indulge in healthy treats like Coconut Bliss ice cream or delectable raw desserts, but I also love a good old fashioned baked good now and then!
Here’s one of those marvelous little sweeties that I love to treat myself with. A vegan black forest cupcake and a lavender blueberry Italian soda at the coffee shop just up the street from our new town house!
Just sparkling water with a few pumps of delicious flavored syrup. The color was lovely and the flavor was even lovelier.
On Sunday, we had a date day! We went off to nearby Durham and feasted on a delicious Mediterranean lunch followed by these tasty treats at Francesca’s a lovely little dessert oriented café in our favorite part of the old down town.
We each got a coffee drink: I had the vegan cappuccino on the right, and Maddie had an iced coffee with soy milk on the left, topped with some of the extra soy milk foam. We split a “Moo Monster” vegan cookie and a little cup of vegan soy cookie crunch gelatto. Divine.
My love of desserts has gotten me to thinking lately. There are many social constructions surrounding the way in which we indulge and treat ourselves. Women are told from a very young age that they “shouldn’t eat that” or that they “don’t need that” especially when it comes to sweets and treats, while young boys are always “growing” or “hitting a growth spurt”. If women love desserts and love to indulge in a little sweet goodness, it’s seen as decadence, while for men it’s seen as fuel. I’m just as active (if not more) than most of the men that I know, not to mention the fact that I’m both vegan and have a fast metabolism, mostly because of my diet and exercise routine. A little sweet never hurt anyone, so why this stigma surrounding women and dessert? If women skip dessert, they’re both controlled and reserved, they’re healthy and strong willed. But what if women go ahead and eat that cookie or cupcake? To me that’s almost more strong-willed: the ability to live, love, and indulge a little. So don’t be afraid to make (and eat!) dessert tonight.
What sweets have you been loving lately?
Bisous!

Sweets are my gym motivation
I’ve never completely lost my sweet tooth – and I do still struggle a bit with guilty feelings. Argh! However, eating plant-based and trying to eat only unrefined sugars definitely lessens the guilt!
